I have a sand finish of plaster on all my walls. How do I get rid of it, short of redoing all drywall?
The new house we are moving into has no traditional drywall. Instead it has blueboard with a skim coat of rough plaster to make it textured or like a sand finish. Its on all of the walls and we dont like it at all. What are my options to fix it? Can I sand it, or skim over it? Or do I have to replace alllllll of the drywall ?
You can try light sanding if you want. but I would skim over it with compound, With a good touch , there shouldn’t be many trowel lines to sand out. It is cleaner than sanding, and with a bit of practice, to me, just as quick, if not quicker. And NO, you don’t have to replace ANYTHING.
Just a hint if you have never floated a wall–thin your mud with water to a "softer" consistancy, makes things a lot easier to control for a beginner.

Also if you are open to wall paper then they do make a felt product to use when papering over cinder block walls that may offer another option. Or you could get someone to come in and cover your skip trowel finish with another type of texture like a knock down or an orange peel. Contact a local drywall finisher for better details to these other texture options
