How do i plaster an old brick wall in my garden?
I have an old brick wall in my garden that looks a bit scruffy. I am thinking of plastering it and then painting it to make the garden look a little more attractive for the summer. I have heard that plastering is a tough job but can someone give me an insight into what materials i.e types of plaster etc i would require.

You could just put a coat of cement on it and rough it up a little using a brush

You wouldn’t be using plaster, you’d need a cement render.

Wear old cloths. Get rubber gloves, plastic container or wheel barrow, hose, stick/trowel, stucco mix. Wet the wall, don’t do this on a hot day, cool cloudy day is best. The wall needs to be free of mud and dirt and grease. The longer the stucco stays wet the stronger it will be. Put on the gloves. Put 1/4 of a sack of stucco in the plastic container/wheel barrow. Add water a little at a time and stir the mix. Stop adding water when the stucco at the bottom gets wet. Mix more. Add water only a little at a time and mix. When it is thicker than pancake batter it is OK. Add more dry stucco powder of too runny, add more water if to dry. Let sit 15 minutes. Take a ball of stucco in one hand and smear it on the wall. The thickness can be adjusted by you. All the kids will want to join, it is lots of fun. Mix more as needed. Wash the kids and cloths asap.
Mist the wall(lightly) 6 to 12 hours later, wet every 12 hours for a day or two. Wait a month or more to paint.

before you apply any plaster always wet the wall first. you will need to mix some sand and cement mixed 4 parts sand to 1 part cement and mix it very wet like slurry this is called scudding . this is very important if it is an old wall because it will give the wall grip for your next coat.you will need to need to cover the wall very lightly with this you should use a dasher and make sure you leave no gaps an then leave it for a day. now its ready for a scratch coat this time you have to mix the sand and cement 4 parts sand and 1 part cement and 1 part lime but mix it thicker this time you should be able to spread it easily. apply an even flat coat and lightly scratch it with a yard brush and leave it until the next day. the scratch coat will make it easier when applying the finish coat. mix the same as the scratch coat and apply an even flat coat and then use a float in a circular motion an when it is floated up 30 mins use a dry sponge in a circular motion adding a little water if needed
