I bought a house only five months ago. It’s a Victorian stone terrace circa 1900. The house has been recently renovated but I have notice a small crack in the plaster in the kitchen running along the wall right in the corner (where the wall meets the ceiling). Could this just be the result of a bad plastering job or could it be subsidence?

We had a survey and check, etc done only in July 2007 – is there was any history of subsidence or currently any signs of it would the survey pick up on it?

whats subsidence ? the crack is the result of the house settling or the plaster dryed to fast,

I had a plasterer skim a room and he told me it would take five days to dry so I did as he said and sealed and painted it after 5 days. The plasterer did a really bad job so I got the room re-skimmed and this time waited over a week as the next plasterer told me to wait till it was pink all over. (proper advice) What are the effects if the plaster from the first job was not completely dry? Will everything be ok?

every room is different plaster should take 3 days to dry but you should not paint till 2 weeks. i know lots of people who have painted within a couple of days and they have had no problems but if you did and the paint started to crumble and peal off you would not be able to complain to the plasterer. you should only use white trade paint first as a primer. put on a couple of coats and then once its dryed put on some better stuff. trade paint you buy in B and Q and its just a cheap none vinyl paint. as for that other coment about it should be like glass thats not true. it should be smoot but not glass, for the best result before painting lightly sand the surface to get the perfect surface for the paint to take to. last thing as well don’t try speeding up the drying process by turning up the heating in years time it will crack. just let it dry at its own pase.

We bought an old house several years ago, and repainted the master bathroom. The humidity in that bathroom has already destroyed the paint, and it is molding as well as peeling. I would like to remove all of the old paint from the plaster (since it has mold in it) before refinishing, but can’t figure out what to use. Can I use "Zip Strip" on old plaster walls? I would like the job to go as quickly as possible! Thanks!

The best and quickest way is probably to rent a sand blaster. Is it going to be the easiest or the cleanest? Not by a long shot. But you will be removing a lot of the mold along with the paint. Your probably going to need to get a professional to remove all the mold. I would highly recommend a professional breathing apparatus that is rated for mold as well. You can get into some serious health issues when dealing with Mold.

I was on the bus the other morning & i notice that 80% of the people on the bus on there way to work where foreigners. I got of the bus & walked along O’Connell street Dublin city. Most of the people i saw on there way to work where foreign. Why is this? Iv been out of work now for a year, both my brothers are out of work too, most of my friends are out of work as well. I was working with 3 polish lads this time last year & the other day i bump into one of them. I was talking to him for a while & he was telling me he & the other two lads where getting loads of work, that most of his polish friends are working, he couldn’t believe me when i told him i had not been working since i was working with him. I told him i haven’t even had an interview since i got let go. He got 6 interviews within a month after he got let go & got offered 4 of the jobs. Please don’t think i’m bashing the foreigners, but i think we should look after our own especially now with the recession. I have over 15 years experience in construction, carpentry, bricklaying, plastering & operating machinery & i cant get a job in IKEA because i haven’t got the experience to assemble flappack furniture. What a joke!

I think it’s good that foreigners are getting a chance to do work over here, they’re bringing culture over. Also, they’re really hard-working.

Sayingthetruth, how dare you accuse this guy of being racist? you are such a hypocrite! how about you actually get to know some Irish people before you go around accusing us of stuff like living in a ’selfish, greed stupid uneducated environment’!

And btw, ‘We have nothing against human beings, but you are not humans’ is the single most racist comment I have ever heard!

I have a 9-5 weekdays office job but I want to train in a trade so that I can do odd jobs in my free time for extra cash. Maybe plumbing, electrics, plastering….

In which trade(s) is the demand and the money made? I imagine that some will be far more sought after and profitable than others.

I would guess that electricians or mechanics would be the most sought after. A lot of people aren’t afraid to take on a plumbing job these days with the DIY craze. Electricity and engines on the other hand are still pretty intimidating for most.

I have worked for a local council in UK for 15 years fitting windows/doors and have recently changed departments to fitting kitchens/bathrooms and general maintenance within properties-plastering/carpentry etc althou have no qualification certificates. Have looked at the list of skilled jobs required in Oz and gather certification is needed. Would this suffice? The list just says General Plumber? Cheers in advance!

I don’t think you have enough qualifications, but here is the skills assessment information for General Plumber. On the page is a link to VETASSESS which is the assessing body for that trade and they have a self-assessment tool for potential applicants to gauge their suitability for the assessment process.
http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/occupations/p/plumber-general-4431-11.htm

It’s very unlikely that any visa applications for plumbers will be processed for the next year or so anyway, so if you’re serious about coming here, perhaps you could look into upgrading your qualifications – I imagine that will be beneficial even if you end up staying in the UK. I suggest you join a couple of the expat forums where you’ll be able to get excellent advice on what’s required from people who’ve been through the process.

Is there satisfaction in your job? How do you feel about women doing this job? Do you consider it an "art "!?

I have been a mason for 40 years. I also have been an engineer, a technician, a salesman, a marketer, and an executive in technology companies. I have started 6 technology companies. The wlls, buildings and fireplaces that I built 40 years ago are still there and will probably be there after I am dead. Most of the technology companies that I started and worked for are gone.

I recently put in 5,000 brick and 4 yards of concrete for a friend in New York. Everyone looks at my work as they go by. Even though I am a well know consultant in communications, everyone in NY calls me the bricklayer from CA. It makes me proud.

There is nothing stopping a woman from becoming a plasterer. If you’re going to do it, do it right, so you will know and always remember what you did. Come right, come big, or stay home.

The vast majority of plastering nowadays is EIFS work. That’s the stucco like product that is applied over foam that is used on many commercial and some residential buildings. Skimcoating over blueboard is a common wall finish in upscale houses. The old style lath and plaster, as well as plaster moulding, is kind of a dying art. Try contacting the union where you live to see about an apprenticeship. You will learn all aspects of the trade, and get paid while you do. The plasterers around here do pretty well. Hope this helps.
