How do I tell if my exterior porch columns are made of plaster?

There are some cracks and a 6" hole in the one pillar that is crumbling out pieces of what looks like plaster. The house is very old and there is plaster on most of the walls, but I always thought the pillars outside were brick, since they have lines that appear to be brick. With the way it crumbles out could it be a wood frame for support and plaster made to look like brick? How would I determine this and then how can I fix it? Thanks for any help.

Plaster is only for indoors. Water would have washed plaster right off the supports. It could be a Stucco finish, or else the bricks are just crumbling from weight. You may have to replace the posts.

Get a professional to look at them. You can get a free estimate, and ask the contractor how he plans to fix it.

How to get dried plaster out of floorboards?

I recently had ‘workmen’ in to do some re-plastering. They managed to tread plaster into my stripped floorboards, and to splash it on to stripped skirtings. (All sealed with matt varnish). Of course it has found it’s way into all the grooves, old worm holes etc. Short of stripping the floors, is there any way to remove it? Water just seems to spread it and when it dries it comes back. Thanks in anticipation!

Hi

I had the same prob, Agree with below, but also try white vinegar diluted in a little warm water. Use a cotton bud to get into the grooves also neat white spirit and it wont harm yr floor.

How can I improve the insulation of lath and plaster clad exterior walls?

I’m having the two living rooms in my victorian semi knocked into one and want to improve the insulation at the same time as the front room in particular gets really cold (it has a bay window which probably doesn’t help). The outside walls are solid brick with an air gap and then lath and plaster mounted on battens (I think). I’m not worried about ripping off all the lath and plaster but I want something that’s going to have the greatest effect with the minimum cash and effort.

It can be blown in from the interior through holes made at the top and bottom . They can be smaller than 3" inches. There is a special nozzle for this type of application. You can do this yourself – I did…

I have a sand finish of plaster on all my walls. How do I get rid of it, short of redoing all drywall?

The new house we are moving into has no traditional drywall. Instead it has blueboard with a skim coat of rough plaster to make it textured or like a sand finish. Its on all of the walls and we dont like it at all. What are my options to fix it? Can I sand it, or skim over it? Or do I have to replace alllllll of the drywall ?

You can try light sanding if you want. but I would skim over it with compound, With a good touch , there shouldn’t be many trowel lines to sand out. It is cleaner than sanding, and with a bit of practice, to me, just as quick, if not quicker. And NO, you don’t have to replace ANYTHING.

Just a hint if you have never floated a wall–thin your mud with water to a "softer" consistancy, makes things a lot easier to control for a beginner.

How can you get dried plaster off carpet?

We were decorating and some plaster got on the carpet and dried. We’ve no idea how to get rid of it!

Plaster is usually easily removed if you wet it down.. spray it with water, scape it off and wash the spot..that should do it..
